Travel & Carbon Emissions: The Impact

icons-carbon-orga-planet-01

On the planet

Rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere have contributed to a global climate crisis. Unfortunately, tourism plays a considerable role in today’s climate emergency.

  • Tourism is responsible for ~8% of the world’s carbon emissions
  • Air travel emissions increased by 32% in the five years preceding the pandemic
  • Sea levels could rise 3.6 feet by 2100 if emissions continue to grow
  • Alpine resorts could lose 70% of their snow cover by the end of this century

On your business

Concerns over sustainability issues are top of mind for today’s consumers. This is reflected in the transportation modes, travel operators, and destinations they’re choosing.

  • 90% of global consumers look for sustainable options when traveling
  • 70% have avoided a destination or transportation option because they felt it was not committed to sustainable practices
  • On average, consumers are wiling to pay 38% more to make their travel more sustainable

Take a leadership role in reducing the travel industry's carbon footprint

Travel-Generated Emissions

Flying, lodging, transportation, and other activities all produce carbon emissions. Learn more about tourism’s carbon footprint here.

Carbon Offset Purchases

Emissions generated by travel can be offset by contributions to certified carbon reduction projects such as those detailed below.

Carbon Reduction Projects

These projects reduce carbon dioxide by capturing or storing existing CO2, or by preventing new emissions from happening.

Broad Sustainability Benefits

Projects may provide benefits that go beyond carbon reduction, such as protecting biodiversity or traditional ways of life within indigenous communities.

What types of projects might be funded through WeTravel's offset purchase option?

WeTravel has partnered with Sustainable Travel International to fund carbon emission mitigation and broader sustainability projects (as defined by the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals) around the world. Offset purchases will support projects in one or more of the following areas:

Forests & Biodiversity
Our forestry protect, restore, and improve sustainable management of forest ecosystems. Safeguarding these ecologically-rich habitats plays a vital role in carbon sequestration, while conserving biodiversity.
Clean & Efficient Energy
Energy projects decrease carbon generated from energy use. Clean energy projects fund renewable energy infrastructure, while efficiency projects support the application of new technologies or practices that lessen energy use.
Coastal Blue Carbon
Our blue carbon projects protect important coastal ecosystems that store substantial amounts of carbon. Along with sequestering carbon, these ecosystems protect communities from harmful climate impacts and provide habitats for marine life.
Local Communities
Our offset projects also lead to valuable benefits for local communities. For instance, projects may create new jobs, protect traditional livelihoods and land rights, improve health and sanitation, or fund much-needed community services.

Funds will go to whichever area and project has the most need at a given point in time.
